TURNIPS

Benefits:

  • Useful source of Vitamin C
  • Source of fibre
  • Low in kilojoules
  • May help to ease bronchial problems

The fibre contained in turnips helps to maintain bowel regularity and may help to prevent colonic or rectal cancer. Turnips are a useful source of Vitamin C, which is needed for healthy skin and tissues. They consist mainly of water and are low in kilojoules.

Some herbalists suggest that a few teaspoons of home-made turnip syrup a day may relieve respiratory ailments, such as bronchitis and asthma. The syrup, which is watery rather than thick, is made by boiling a portion of chopped turnip in a little water. The green tops of turnips are gaining greater recognition: they are an excellent source of beta carotene, Vitamin C and a good source of folate. They make a sweet-tasting green vegetable when boiled until tender, and I love adding them to winter stews, casseroles and soups.
