Overcoming skinniness

My story on how I went from skinny to bulky in 2 months
by John Sweeney

In a country were people are caught up with trying to loose weight, us skinny people can get lost. For the most part, women want to be slender and toned and men want to be big and muscular. Well there are both men and women out there who want to put more weight on their bodies. I was one of these people. During my late teens I was 5,10” and weighed a measly 137 pounds. I was so skinny that my collarbone and ribs stuck out. Similarly, my legs were so skinny that I could easily wrap my hands around my quads. To be honest there was not much of a size difference between my calves and my quads. Needless to say, I never wore shorts or took off my shirt for any reason. Even in the dead of summer, I would wear my baggy pants in the hopes that they would make my legs look bigger. In fact I was so ashamed of my size that I always wore more than one shirt and I also wore two pairs of sports pants under my jeans in the hopes that this extra clothing would make me look bigger. It did make me look a little bit bigger but I also made me extremely hot in the summer time and open to ridicule from others (i.e. “how come you’re wearing two T-shirts? It’s got to be over 30 today”).

When my early twenties rolled around, I didn’t gain any weight, so I made a promise to myself that I would attempt to mould a body I could be proud of. I tried for about 4 years with very little success, but then just after my 24th birthday I struck gold. At this point I’d done a lot of research, I was working out regularly and I was eating like a maniac. At the time I developed my weight gain program I weighed 159 pounds, When I completed my program 2 months later I weighed 180 pounds. I gained 21 pounds of muscle in 8 weeks! Before this program I was only able to gain this much weight over the course of 6 years!

What was I doing right? Below is a list of some basic information you are going to need if you make weight gaining your goal.

  1. EAT LIKE A CHAMP!
If you want to gain a substantial amount of weight quickly, you are going to need to consume a large amount of extra calories in order to pack on the pounds. It takes 3500 extra calories to gain one pound of body weight. This means that not only will you still need your daily caloric intake, but you will need to add to it. To find out how many calories you need to consume per day check out my website:

In order to eat this many calories, you will need to find yourself eating at all times of the day (in fact you should have a sandwich in your hand right now). The foods you eat will be very important as well. Some example of high quality foods that will have you gaining weight quickly include: brown rice, eggs, cottage cheese, tuna, chicken, beef, breads and high calorie fruits such as banana’s. For a more in-depth eating schedule check out my website.

  2. WORKOUT LIKE A LUNATIC
Many hard gainers fail to completely grasp this concept. However, if you want to gain muscle mass, having a proper workout routine is essential. In order to gain muscle mass, and not just tone the muscle you already have, you are going to need to lift really heavy weights. Not just weights that will have you put through a little bit of pain, but you will need to lift weights that will have you wishing you had never been born. This is called resistance training and is important because it requires your body to adapt to the new demands being placed on it. Therefore, your body will grow according to how far you push it past its threshold.

  3. SLEEP TIME
Most people wanting to put on weight generally overlook sleeping, but it is an essential element to the weight gaining process. This is because your body grows while you sleep. Contrary, to popular belief, you do not grow in the gym, you only tear your muscle fibres there, and then go to bed to have your body repair them, and in turn grow. You should be getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night if you want to fully repair your body.

  4. SKINNY HABITS’
Skinny people do many things that prohibit them from gaining any weight. Below I list two of the more common ones.

    Nicotine and Caffeine
Both of these substances speed up your metabolism making it harder for you to pack on the weight you want. During your weight gaining months make every calorie count and limit or halt your consumption of these substances

    Fidgeting
Many skinny people can’t sit still. Believe it or not, this will stunt your growth efforts. Fidgeting can actually cause the loss of up to 700 calories per day. This is as much as a small steak dinner. So if you’re serious about weight gain… SIT STILL!

Well there you have it! Some of the basic information on how I managed to gain 21 pounds of muscle in 8 weeks. This was no small feat and by no means was it easy. However, now I have a body to be proud of and one that I can say I built naturally with a lot of hard work.

Transforming my body has changed every aspect of my life. I now have the confidence to take my shirt off and feel comfortable. I also find myself doing this which I would have never thought possible before (such as making my website www.buildsize.com ). If your reading this and you want to gain weight, I recommend that you dedicated yourself 100% to your objective. I promise that it will change every aspect about your life and have you feeling and looking better within a few short weeks. Until next time, keep eating and keep eating!
