PINEAPPLES

Benefits

  • Aids digestion.
  • May prevent blood clotting.

Scientists have recently claimed that pineapple may have some useful medical benefits. A 100 gram portion of raw pineapple contains 41 calories, plus potassium and some vitamin C, however it’s an enzyme called bromelain that is the particular cause of excitement.

Bromelain appears to aid digestion by breaking down protein, and it is also thought to inhibit blood clots and ‘furring’ of the arteries, making it especially beneficial for sufferers of heart disease and strokes. In addition, bromelain has achieved dramatic results as an anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment of arthritis, as well as in speeding up the process of tissue repair after sprains, sports injuries and surgery.

To derive any of these benefits, eat fresh pineapples: although canning leaves vitamin C intact, it destroys the bromelain.

Gargling with pineapple juice is a traditional folk remedy for sore throats, while the fruit itself is sometimes prescribed for catarrh, bronchitis and indigestion.

NB. In very rare cases fresh pineapple can cause an allergic reaction.
