PEARS

Benefits

  • High in natural sugar
  • A useful source of fibre, Vitamin C and potassium

A pear contains about 293 kilojoules, most of which are in the form of natural fruit sugars, so a pear provides a quick and convenient source of energy. Pears are also a useful source of Vitamin C, although you would need to eat four or five pears, to meet the full daily requirement for an adult.

Because pears are among the least allergenic of foods, and well tolerated by nearly everyone, they are appropriate as a weaning food and also in exclusion diets. Pears make a useful contribution to potassium intake, which plays a part in regulating blood pressure. They are also a source of the soluble fibre known as pectin, and of bioflavonoids, which are strong antioxidants and may protect against a wide range of conditions.

Dried pears are high in kilojoules and a useful source of fibre. They contain iron and are rich in potassium.
