Health the Natural Way Earth’s Medicine Cabinet Medical Aid Rates Do Not Apply!
Basic Nutrition We are warned constantly about the adverse effects of refining and processing natural food, of additives and of pollution but there is disagreement on certain points, the main one being health foods [organically grown] versus regular food. People eat health foods for many reasons:
- because they like plain good food,
- because they are concerned about chemical additives either in the growing or in the processing of food,
- or because they feel that food is directly linked to how they look and feel.
There are alternatives to the specialised health shop. There is enough fresh food around to supply all the nutrients anyone normally needs. This is the rational way to nutrition and it takes only a basic knowledge of food constituents, their preservation and utilisation, to work out a conscientious diet. It is being aware of food values that matters, so that you do not unconsciously give your body worthless foods - or worse, poisonous ones. A lot is ordinary common sense:
- Fresh is best.
- Eat plenty of vegetables and fruit, raw when possible.
- Make friends with your Green Grocer.
- Eat seasonal fruit and vegetables.
- Certain manufactured, processed or refined food should be avoided.
- Sugar and all its derivatives should be cut down to a minimum.
- Eat foods rich in fibre (also known as roughage).
- Eat a minimum of fat.
- Listen to your body.
- Become knowledgeable about food and your body, and the impact food has on your body, both in terms of adverse effects and benefits.
