The best known varieties of melon are Spanspek (Cantaloupe melon), Watermelon and Sweet melon (Honeydew). All varieties are high in water and low in calories depending on the type, a 100 gram serving contains up to 31 Calories. Melons also contain potassium and vitamin C. Spanspek (Cantaloupe melon), the orange flesh variety is the most nutritious. A 100 gram portion supplies more than half the daily vitamin C requirement and plenty of beta carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A. These antioxidant vitamins may help to protect against cancer and heart disease.
