Eastern Balancing Massage
By Jackie van Zyl

Introduction

This is a therapeutic approach to alternative holistic massage methods.  This method gives the therapist the ideal massage technique to balance mind and body by using various techniques from the Far East. This includes traditional Japanese healing methods.

Through reading the body and determining where the imbalances are, a specific massage is designed for the client. This will balance the client’s ki. By using a combination of Reiki, shiatsu, acupressure, reflexology, meridian and herbal therapies the yin and yang energies of the body are balanced to give the client a total sense of well being, vitality and balanced mind.

Unique massage techniques with heated pre-mixed herbs are used to massage the body, to give you the optimum result in clearing and balancing. On the physical level the warm herbs stimulate the blood circulation and the lymphatic system to drain toxins out of the body.

Preparation for treatment

  • Allow enough time so that you are not arriving in a hurry or rushing away afterwards.
  • Have a snack about an hour before the session so you are neither full nor hungry.
  • Rest afterwards. Make the rest of the day a relaxing day.
  • Drink plenty of spring water to flush out any toxins out any toxins released.

Do not

  • Drink alcohol on the day of the treatment
  • Eat large or heavy meal on the same day as the treatment
  • Exercise more than normal
  • Take an excessively hot bath

What to expect from a session

The massage is done with pre-heated herbs in cotton bags.  The session lasts about 85 minutes.

You feel revitalised and your energy system energised. All the stress has been drained out of your body and your energies balanced.

Hot stone therapy massage
By Jackie van Zyl

Stone massage is a form of bodywork that involves the application of heated stones to the body during deep tissue massage.

Stone therapy involves a spiritual element that opens energy channels in the body, unblocks memories and brings about spiritual healing.

The benefits of a hot stone massage

  • Stimulates the circulatory system and promotes self healing.
  • Softens and relaxes the muscles.
  • Helps to release toxins from the muscles.
  • Induces a state of deep relaxation that washes away stress.
  • Helps relieve pain and muscle spasms.
  • Creates a feeling of peacefulness and spiritual wellbeing.

What to expect of a hot stone therapy treatment

Warm massage oil is spread on the clients back and legs. The stones are then worked over the body. The client turns over and the process is repeated on the arms, hands and fingers. The final parts to be massaged are the neck, head and face. Hot stones are placed on energy centres to increase energy flow. The massage lasts about 85 minutes.

The stones

Special flat basalt or Baltic stones are used for this massage. They retain heat for a long time. They are heated to about 34 degrees. They have healing properties to energise the energy system and unblock emotional and physical blockages.

Reflexology

History of reflexology

Although many people think of reflexology as an alternative, new complementary medicine they could not be further from the truth. In fact, they are about 5000 years out.

The Chinese are the first to have thought to use some form of pressure therapy. This was believed to be very similar to acupuncture. Evidence of ancient Egyptians have been found on tomb drawings-dating back some 3000 years ago. The pictures showed the feet being held and massaged. Red Indians and primitive tribes of Africa have also known to have used some basic forms of reflexology. The first book ever to be produced was in 1582 by two European doctors Dr. Adamus and Dr. A.A. Tatis this was based on zone therapy.

A lot of studies where made on the reflexes found on the feet, Miss Eunice Ingham invented the Ingham compression method of reflexology and used pressure point massage to stimulate the reflexes she found on the foot.

Since the 70’s, reflexology has kept on developing. Discoveries and techniques are being made every day and charts have come a long way from those first created by Dr. Fitsgerald, to divide the feet into zones.

Benefits of reflexology

  • The signs we see on the feet shows the true inner self, it is essential to read the feet to get the total picture of well being. All signs of imbalances and diseases can be seen on the feet.
  • Stimulates blood circulation
  • Unblocks mental and emotional blockages in the energy system.
  • Stimulates energy flow in the energy channels (meridian).
  • Promotes general sense of well being.
  • Draws stresses from the body, leaving the body feeling revitalized and relaxed at the same time.

Precautions

Reflexology is suitable for almost everybody. The pressure will be adapted to different needs of the client.

The Reflexology treatment

Reflexology is focused on the feet.
Powder is used as a work medium. The treatment can vary from 30 minutes to 60 minutes.

Reiki

What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient art of laying on of the hands.
The living body, animal or human, radiates warmth and energy. This energy is the life force it self. In Japan the energy is termed Ki and it is from this word that Reiki is named.  Everything alive contains Ki and radiates it. Ki is the bio-magnetic energy of the aura.

What makes Reiki different from other touch healing systems is the atonement process. A person who has been through the process of Reiki atonement has experienced a very ancient technology of raising the vibrations of the physical and the etheric bodies. Certain energy centres (known as chakras) are opened to enable the person to channel and vibrate higher amounts of life energy or Ki. Reiki is not a religion. This life force energy is the source of life itself.

Reiki is a wonderful tool to help one develop conscious awareness, the very key to enlightenment.  Reiki relieves pain, speeds up healing, stops bleeding, relaxes the receiver and balances the chakras and aura.  The rates of respiration slow down and blood pressure lowers. Emotional calming also occurs.  Anything else that happens is up to the energy. We are merely facilitators for the energy and only the receiver can be responsible for their healing if they are ready to let go of whatever it is that is causing the problem. We simply provide the space for the person and do the healing with them, rather than to them.

Reiki will never do any harm and is valid for young and old, plants and animals. If there is illness, pain or emotional upset, Reiki helps.  It will not prevent someone from dying if it is not his or her will but it will ease the process.

The effects of Reiki

Reiki affects each individual in a very personal way. The results of every treatment are determined by the needs of the individual. Here are some common experiences, which seem to result in most treatments.

  • Balances energy
  • Increases creativity
  • Helps release emotions
  • Works on causal level of disease
  • Amplifies energy
  • Healing
  • Increases awareness

What to expect from a Reiki treatment?

If you have never experienced Reiki, the following is an explanation of what you might expect from a treatment.

A Reiki treatment usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. The Reiki practitioner places his/her hands gently and passively on different locations on the body, usually beginning at the head.  Each position is held for at least 5 minutes. Reiki is different from traditional massage because the person may remain fully clothed. Unlike massage Reiki does not require any form of manipulation of tissue or muscles so the hands remain still. Reiki can even flow through a plaster cast.

It is common for the person being treated to experience sensations such as warmth or tingling flowing from the practitioner’s hands. Most people report entering a deep state of relaxation. Those familiar with meditation say they enter a deep meditative state. The mind calms, the breathing slows down and a feeling of well-being and centeredness and a better sense of perspective are attained.

By receiving a 1 hour session of Reiki, one physiologically attains many of the benefits equivalents to 3-4 hours sleep as increased oxygen supply to the blood and cells. The clinical observation, combined with the meditative state, makes Reiki a most affective stress reliever.
