Interesting Times

With the amount of information so readily available through the internet and other technological resources, people are discovering more and more how important it is to follow a healthy eating regime. Research is indicating that processed food and even the products that we use day to day, like hand creams, deodorants and household cleaners, can all have adverse effects on our body’s and negatively affect our health. Whilst most products are held up to the most stringent testing and controls, it’s still important to be proactive with your health, and realise that you have a choice to buy and use the products you do.

Each of us is unique and our body’s react differently to the food we eat, to the products we use and the environments we frequent - I was again, recently reminded of this when I noticed the hands of an acquaintance. Her hands were red, with peeling skin to the extreme of having open welts that oozed a clear liquid. Unable to be discreet, I inquired about her hands and asked what the problem was. Even though she was obviously embarrassed, she told me how her hands had just started peeling and then the skin started breaking in open slits and welts which made her hands very sore and extremely painful when she tried to use them for the most mundane of daily chores. To such an extent, that she can no longer drive and has to wait for her husband to take her somewhere when she needs. After months of medication (and no apparent cause for the symptoms) there had been no difference or improvement and so she sought alternative care using some homeopathic remedies, which also gave no improvement even after another several months. In the last few weeks she has decided to just ‘live’ with her hands the way they are, forgoing expensive treatments - despite the pain and inconvenience.

Having experienced a similar condition when I was a teenager - which my General practitioner said was a result of extreme stress, which I tended to experience when I was busy with school exams, I had a deep empathy for her condition. My hands would peel to such an extent that parts of my skin would be red raw and in places, even bleeding, making it difficult to write my exams. At the time, I also tried various creams and medication with almost no benefit or improvement, but unlike my acquaintance, after my exams were complete, my hands would start to heal and there was little evidence of my condition in less than a week.

Over the years I have discovered that when my hands start to “bubble, blister and peel” - soaking in a natural salt bath twice a week for twenty minutes, increasing my water and Rooibos Tea intake and eating apples does seem to improve the condition of my hands, without ever having experienced the extreme peeling and raw conditions that I did as a teenager. I shared my experience with this acquaintance, and although she hates drinking Rooibos Tea, I told her to soak her hands in warm to hot - black Rooibos Tea, once or twice a day for 20 to 30 minutes, or even place warm to hot Rooibos Tea bags on her hands, eat lots of apples and start drinking water. Although she hasn’t started eating any apples or even drinking any water, she was so pleased with the benefits of soaking her hands in Rooibos Tea everyday for a week, she came to show me the results. There is no more peeling skin and the open welts are healing. She is able to ‘move’ her hands and fingers for the first time in months without causing anymore damage, and after soaking her hands she explained that the pain relief was incredible. It was my turn to be embarrassed by both her and her husbands enthusiastic gratitude and thanks for my sharing advice and caring.

It is important to seek medical advice and care when needed, especially when you are ill, and just as important to follow the advice of your health care provider. However, it’s equally important to be aware of the products you use on your body, in your home and office environment, and it’s just as important to be proactive with your ongoing health needs, by being proactive in protecting your body from external influences and eating the right foods to increase your body power from within.
